A shining example of the opportunities retail offers to progress up the ranks, Deryane began her career 20 years ago as a part time sales assistant, and with no formal training or higher education, is now owner of one of the UK’s most successful, multi-award winning independent retailers, The Dressing Room.
Having worked within fashion retail, and learning the ropes when working with the owner of a new franchise business for French Connection, she took out a bank loan, and in 2005 launched the boutique in St. Albans, selling a combination of niche brands and local designers.Since the launch eight years ago The Dressing Room has trebled in size and with a successful e-commerce site, Deryane now employs ten people.
Passionate about the importance of employee engagement in retail, Deryane runs a staff development programme in conjunction with NVQ training, holds breakfast styling sessions and cites the appointment of her ‘right hand woman’ as one of her key successes.
The judges were particularly impressed with Deryane’s leadership philosophy, encouraging her team to be involved in the running of the business, and nurturing their diverse skills-set to fulfil her goal of growing her business within the UK and beyond.
Deryane is also passionate about using her experience to give other women the confidence to run their own retail businesses, and demonstrate how it is possible to turn your dreams into reality.
Deryane was named in the 2011 and 2012 Drapers Power List and regularly provides advice to budding entrepreneurs at retail conferences and trade shows.
