Emma Dalzell is the founder of Bare Bones Marketing Ltd, based in Middlewich, Cheshire. Emma has 25 years of marketing experience with global brands such as Vodafone, Citibank and Cable & Wireless. She left her role as Head of Marketing Communications at E.ON, following the birth of her daughter, to set up her own marketing business in 2011. Six years later, and four years after first appearing as Women’s Business Council case study, Emma updates us on a busy few years.
“When I started my business, I had just left the corporate world and wanted to spend more time with my young daughter – and I’ve succeeded in doing just that! She’s now going into junior school and I can probably count on two hands the times I’ve not been able to walk her to school in the morning. The business has given me flexibility, but I haven’t had to compromise my drive to be successful. We’ve won awards for “Best Small Business” and customer service, and picked up both local and national contracts, for periods of up to four years, which gives the business both credibility and stability. Our clients now cover a wide range of industries including construction, education, hotels and hospitality, local authorities and charities. We even help market a whole city! We’ve taken on a new director, and grown to a team of six, including an apprentice, plus we’ve hosted around 20 interns and given many graduates their first step on the career ladder. Our brand creations and campaigns have been successful nationally and we boast some amazing return on investment figures for our clients because of our commercial understanding coupled with our creative and executional expertise.
I have continued with my public speaking, in education and for commercial organisations and I love inspiring others with my entrepreneurial story and career journey. Through all of the exponential growth we’ve experienced, it has been important to me that we’ve stayed true to our core values – offering a down-to-earth service with a commercial focus – something that really makes us stand out. Our vision is to be “trailblazing marketers who champion people, clients and communities to achieve growth.” We’ve expanded our services to include media planning & buying, complete brand development, social media management, illustration, videography and photography, and we’re even Google & Apple approved App developers. I’m also passionate about our social responsibility, and as a team we volunteer hundreds of hours each year in our community.
It’s still a juggle and a challenge, but six years on, seeing my little girl growing up, whilst having the career I know I want, has all been worth it.
